On our way to the cathedral we met some children who were bonking frogs. They were singing a special song to the frogs to let the frogs know why they are bonking them. After we listened to the children for a while we walked through the forest until we reached a tiny church in the forest. The priest welcomed us and he told us we could sleep there! Marthe and her children stayed the cloister because she wanted stonewalls around her for protection. Etienne Thomas and I decided to sleep outside in the forest. Etienne gave me a small tree snail who's shell was delicately striped I memorized the lines on it. We made a fire to scare away the wolves and the ghosts that the priest had told us about. Thomas told us about a ghost who was the Maiden of Peterborough. There was once a man who had been riding from Thornham to Peterborough on a stormy night. He saw a maiden in distress on the side of the road and there was no one around her. He decided to help her up and asked to take her home to her father’s house. On the way back to her father’s house he turned around but there was no site of her. He went her father’s house and told him what happened. Her father told the man that his daughter had died 10 years ago on Hollows Eve and she stops to ask for a ride home every year on that same night. After Thomas told the story we went to bed.
In the night I was awoken by a deep eerie call of an owl I thought of the girl on the rode and in Thomas's story. Fright filled me and I couldn't move. I was afraid that if I turned around I would see the Maiden. Thomas woke up beside me and asked what was wrong. I told him that there was an owl and that I was afraid of the story he told us. He put his arm around me and rolled me over and rocked me back to sleep.
Love always,
Elenor
